Understanding the Use of Restraint Gears for Cops

The experience of police officers and prison officers is often that of suspects or prisoners breaking free from their restraints and running for the nearest exit. For this reason, it is important to introduce the proper restraint gear. In addition to regular handcuffs, plastic handcuffs can also be useful. Lightweight, disposable plastic strips that look like electrical cable ties, plastic restraints are lightweight and disposable. Because they can be carried in large quantities by soldiers and police, they are well-suited to situations when a lot of them may be needed, such as during large-scale protests or riots. As a means of restraining disruptive passengers, airlines have recently begun to carry plastic handcuffs. Disposable restraints might be viewed as inefficient because they cannot be loosened and must be cut off for a restrained subject to be fingerprinted or to attend to bodily functions.

Also, leg cuffs work well. They have an inner perimeter that is larger than handcuffs, so they allow a person to fit around his or her ankles. Many models of ankle braces are designed with elliptically contoured cuffs to prevent pressure on the Achilles’ tendon. Handcuffs have shorter chains from one cuff to the other, whereas leg irons have longer chains.

Occasionally, prisoners being transported from custody to outside locations, such as for court appearances or medical treatment, will wear handcuffs augmented with belly chains. This type of harness is called a Leg and Hand Harness Combination. Sometimes a locking mechanism is used to secure the belt to the waist, depending on whether the belt is metal, leather, or canvas. The prisoner’s hands are held at waist level while his handcuffs are secured to his belly chain. While providing a greater degree of movement restriction than simply placing handcuffs on the wrists in front of the prisoner, this method is relatively comfortable for the prisoner during prolonged internment in the securing device.
